How to tell if you’re suffering from hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids cause some uncomfortable symptoms, which is why people prefer to get rid of them. Some symptoms include:
- Itching or irritation
- Swelling
- Moisture or mucus around the anus
- Pain or discomfort
- Bleeding
- Bulges
- Uncomfortable or pressing feeling around the anus
- Pain during bowel movements
How do hemorrhoids develop?
Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins that can appear inside your rectum and just outside the anus. All of us are born with hemorrhoid-tissue, but once it starts to swell or prolapse, the irritation starts.
There are several situations and behaviors that contribute to developing hemorrhoids:
- Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the growing womb can put pressure on veins in your abdomen, which might lead to piles. Pushing during delivery might also cause or worsen piles.
- Age: When you age, the tissue supporting the veins inside and around the anus weakens. This might lead to hemorrhoids.
- Too much sitting down: Sitting on the toilet or behind a desk for long periods of time puts more pressure on your abdomen, which might cause veins to swell and result in piles.
- Chronic constipation or diarrhea: These conditions can cause frequent pushing during bowel movements, which might cause hemorrhoids.
- Genetics: Some people have a genetic predisposition to hemorrhoids.
- Diet: A diet that lacks in fiber can cause constipation, which in turn can contribute to developing piles.
Can hemorrhoids be harmful?
Usually, piles are benign and not seriously harmful for your health. However, we do recommend treating them because they can cause discomfort and complications in the long run. Many people think getting rid of hemorrhoids is painful, but it does not have to be. Are you suffering from piles? Have them checked out by a doctor. If necessary or if you wish, we can proceed with removing them right away during your first appointment at our clinic.
What to do if you are suffering from hemorrhoids
If you have confirmed you are suffering from hemorrhoids, there are different treatment options for you to choose from. The first thing you can do, is address the underlying causes listed above. If your symptoms are still persisting or worsening after two weeks, it would be wise to consult your general practitioner for a referral to a specialist.
Diagnosis
Your general practitioner will perform a brief examination to diagnose you with hemorrhoids. After, they will discuss your treatment options with you and refer you to a specialist.
If your general practitioner refers you to our Chirurgisch Expertise Centrum, we will inspect the affected area and your rectum with a proctoscope. This inspection is described by our clients as uncomfortable and they feel some pressure, but it is not at all painful. To cause you as little discomfort as possible, our surgeons are instructed to use the smallest proctoscope possible. After this brief inspection, no further examination is required for a diagnosis.

Treatment for hemorrhoids
There are different ways to treat your hemorrhoids. For example, the traditional (but rather outdated) treatment for hemorrhoids is placing a rubber band around the base of it. This cuts off blood circulation to the pile. This will be uncomfortable or painful for a couple of days, and it may cause some light bleeding.
We prefer a less painful method that is quicker and causes you the least discomfort. We inject a sclerosing agent directly into the piles. This causes the blood vessels inside the hemorrhoid to collapse, which in turn causes the lump to retract. The treatment only takes a few minutes, and afterward you can resume your daily activities right away.
When is treatment advised?
Most of the time, you can treat hemorrhoids at home. But if your symptoms linger or worsen over time, it is advisable that you seek professional treatment. For example, if you suffer from severe pain, bleeding or notable changes in your bowel movements. Contact your general practitioner if you believe professional care is necessary.
Chirurgisch Expertise Centrum can help you get rid of piles painlessly.
Our innovative hemorrhoid treatment
After determining the cause, we will start removing the piles right away by injection. First, we insert the smallest proctoscope possible to locate them. Then we inject a sclerosing agent at the base. Most patients find this uncomfortable, but not very painful. After this, the hemorrhoids will slowly shrivel up and disappear back into the body. The biggest advantage of our treatment is that it causes our patients as little discomfort as possible and there is never any afterpain. The treatment is done after just a few minutes and you can resume your daily activities right after.
“ ‘Wow, that’s it? I barely felt it!’ is usually the first reaction I get from patients after the treatment is complete. The nice experience makes it easier for patients to seek treatment again, should they need it.” - Dr. Berendsen, Chirurg Expertise Centrum
After treatment
After the hemorrhoid treatment, 90% of cases see improvement immediately. Once in a while, an extra treatment might be necessary. Before we treat a patient again, we always do some research to determine whether it is really necessary. Oftentimes, patients opt to return for treatment instead of waiting for piles to disappear on their own, because of the positive experience they have had before. The contentment of our patients is our main goal.
Why choose our treatment? Dr. Berendes explains
“I have been a surgeon for years and I have carried out many kinds of hemorrhoid treatments. I can say for certain that I back this innovative injection method 100%. There is a noticeable difference in the positive experiences of patients that choose this method instead of rubber band ligation. That is why I hope this method will make it easier for people to seek treatment for their hemorrhoids. There is no need to be ashamed or fearful of it.
Experiences with hemorrhoids treatment at Chirurgisch Expertise Centrum
“When patients first enter our practice, they are often a little tense. So I try to reassure them by explaining our treatment is virtually painless, and I can pause the treatment at any time if they want me to. But I have never had to stop because a patient requested it. Oftentimes, they are even pleasantly surprised about the short duration of the treatment and how little discomfort it causes.” - Dr. Berendsen, Chirurg Expertise Centrum
Patients’ experiences
Piet, treated for hemorrhoids in 2023
“I suffered from hemorrhoids for a long time, but I refrained from seeking treatment because of the shame and anxiety. After a while, the symptoms got too bad, so I decided to visit my general practitioner anyway. They referred me to Chirurgisch Expertise Centrum. I was very anxious at first, but the doctor quickly put me at ease. The hemorrhoid treatment only took a few minutes and afterward, I was like “That’s it?”. It was a piece of cake and I recommend this treatment to anybody who suffers from hemorrhoids.
Sanne, treated for hemorrhoids in 2024
“After my pregnancy, I suffered from hemorrhoids. I had been treated for them before by painful rubber band ligation, but that just made me more hesitant to get treated again. I did not want to experience that pain again, during and after the treatment. A friend told me about the new injection method at Chirurgisch Expertise Centrum. Beforehand, I was still hesitant, but I went for it anyway. Such a relief! Within a few minutes, the treatment was done and the symptoms lessened within days. I recommend this hemorrhoid treatment!

Reimbursement via health insurance
Chirurgisch Expertise Centrum provides medically insured care that is covered by the basic Dutch health insurance package and reimbursed by health insurers.
The basic health insurance defines the scope and content of insured care, which is the same for everyone. The rates charged by the Surgical Expertise Center are based on nationally determined market-standard rates. Agreements have been made with most health insurers, which means care is provided under contract. However, these agreements vary and depend on your specific policy and type of treatment. When scheduling an appointment, you will be informed about the available options, the type of treatment, and the reimbursement details.
If you are not insured in the Netherlands or if your care is not contracted, the self-pay (or “passant”) rate applies. For self-pay patients, the market-standard rate applies. This is a reasonable rate in the Netherlands for a specific treatment. Health insurers determine this rate based on what other healthcare providers typically charge for the same treatment. This market-standard rate may differ from the prices we have agreed upon with individual insurers.
